Mean-Girled

For those that know my family, you know that we travel. A lot. As in almost every weekend. And that hasn't stopped us in November, either! We spent last weekend in Kansas City so Lauren and I could sell our Two Dots clothing at a cheer competition.

I know, I know. Sounds a little strange, but in my mind, it was genius! A bunch of mom's, high school cheerleaders, boredom between their performances equals a good day for Two Dots! We ALWAYS have fun at shows - any kind of show - because we get to meet people and chat and sell stuff! And though we did the same thing at this event, it was a little different from the moment we walked in.

We were mean-girled.

And by mean-girled, I mean we were stared at from the second we walked in the door. This hasn't happened to me since I was in junior high. Literally.

We started unloading and Lauren kept looking around and whispering, "They won't stop staring at us and whispering!" I just kept moving because it takes us a long time to set up and we had 30 minutes to get this knocked out!

So we kept setting up and at some point, I kind of stopped to breathe, and looked around and sure enough. The vendors all around us were just staring.

It's one of those times when you want to look at them and say something extremely sarcastic. "Take a picture, it'll last longer!"

What's odd is the reaction we got wasn't out of character for us. We usually get looks because we aren't selling homemade items or Norwex or Plexus... but we've never been mean-girled!

And if you have ever seen our set up and how we sell our clothes at shows, we have two racks that we run parallel to each other so people can see everything. Once we had everything set up this weekend, one of the Plexus gals walked over to us and with a faux smirk on her face, said "Hi, I'm Brittany." I introduced myself and apologized for not stopping by her booth yet. We usually make our rounds to look at booths once we finish setting up, but it was taking us awhile to get everything together. It was right after that when she looked at me and said, "Yeah, can you move your rack? It's in the way of my booth."

I'm sure I got bright red because I was in shock, embarrassed and down-right mad.

So, in a very un-Allyson-like move, I said, with a smile on my face, "Oh... you weren't coming to introduce yourself, were you?"

No, no she said. She was, she was just nervous people couldn't see her booth from where our clothing racks were. Mind you, we are NOT mean girls and wouldn't purposefully try and hide someone's booth. We were working with what we had!

The day went on and Lauren couldn't stop about these women and how they were acting towards us. The thought to pack up 10 minutes after we arrived did not escape our minds.

But we trudged on. Made a few sales, the most fun being a cheerleader from Blue Valley who made her mom come with her and was excited about all of our clothes as I've ever seen someone be! Her mom and her purchased about four or five items and her mom even asked if they got a discount for buying that many items. It's one of those moments when you're like, "Uhhh... seriously?" Somehow I talked her out of the discount as she was asking her daughter if she wanted another pair of leggings (PS. Fleece-lined leggings in black and navy will be in stock soon and if you don't own a pair, you need to!). It was the most entertaining thing to happen to us that day!

By 1:30 pm, others were packing up, so we decided to do the same and get home to watch the K-State game (and if you know the outcome of that day, you can imagine that this was not the happiest of our days)!

We packed up, headed home and grabbed a beer. Because we needed one.

And we learned a valuable life lesson that day. That it doesn't matter if you are 14, 34 or 54. People will try and make you feel like you are the most awkward turtle in the bunch. It's how you react to them that is key.

We smiled. Sold more than they did. And ate nachos.

Take that, Plexus!

XXOO,
Allyson
